Description

Description

Hojicha is a Bancha that has been roasted over charcoal. It has a distinctive woodsy flavor with tones of green underneath. The liquor has a medium honey hue and provides a heartiness that coffee converts appreciate.

Insider Tip: Hojicha became more well-known in the 1920s, when tea merchants began roasting leaves over charcoal. Hojicha is made from a bancha that is grown in the sun and picked after the first two flushes. The roasting process diminishes the caffeine level, making it a drinkable tea any time of day

Caffeine Level: Low.

Learn More:
Green teas are unoxidized and processed by withering or wilting, followed by pan-firing or steaming, then a shaping process. During the shaping processes, further drying takes place, giving each green tea a distinct shape, character, and flavor. Often shaped by hand in places like China or Vietnam, the skill to craft these teas is passed down from generation to generation. In Japan, most of the tea processing is done mechanically, using machines and conveyor belts to steam, shape, and cool the teas.

Ingredients: Green tea from Japan.
