I like to experiment with different brewing conditions, especially when trying out a new tea. Without precise control over all the aspects of the brewing process, it's very difficult to reproduce a good result. This spoon is dead simple. It provides an easy way to control the leaf-to-water ratio that's far more accurate than "eyeballing" your measurement or using common tableware. It also has markings on the adjustment notches to give you an estimate of the strength of your tea, given the number of cups you're planning on brewing. Just don't depend on the markings too heavily. They're fine as a rough guide for leaves of average size and shape, but you'll end up with a pitifully weak cup of tea if you use them with long, wiry leaves (such as the Dark Goddess oolong) or just the opposite if you use them with compact, dense leaves (like Dong Ding). In those cases, however, the markings are still useful for staying consistent.
