Product Description

This Japanese green has a surprise inside: toasted rice! Genmaicha has a fresh aroma that mingles with the nuttiness of the rice. As a visual treat, some of the rice has popped, resembling miniature popcorn kernels. This tea has more body than other greens and goes well with meals.

Insider Tip: This tea is a delicious treat that is widely consumed across not only Japan, but much of Asia. Try it iced for a non-traditional, refreshing cup!

Caffeine Level: Low.

Learn More:

Genmaicha is a blend of Bancha (lower grade Sencha) green tea and toasted rice. It can also be made with gyokuro, sencha, or houji. Often referred to as 'popcorn tea', because of the popped rice you find in the blend, it was originally blended to thin out traditional Sencha green tea, making it go further and lowering the price in times of economic hardship and low tea supplies. The infusion has a pale yellow/green color and the roasted flavor of the brown rice give a savory quality to the tea, reminiscent of nuts. Because of this savory quality, this tea is often consumed by tea lovers who are fasting.

Ingredients: Green tea from Japan and toasted rice.

I love this tea

Got this green tea in a sampler and it was the last I tried. The first cup I was not to sure of but I stuck with it and now I believe it is one of my favorite teas. It has an under taste that is different, kind of smoky. I think this tea has enough taste to be appreciated first thing in the morning.
Unique tea - not for everyone

This tea has an extremely unique taste that you will either love or hate. Personally, I love it. The toasted rice tastes rather like slightly burnt popcorn on top of a mildly grassy green tea, and it has a very full aroma. It's not a light tea, by any means, so it goes well with meals, but it's great on its own as well.

Bold, complex flavor. Conjures up memories of toasted seaweed. Recommendations: serve during breakfast or dinner.

I remember I was very excited to try this tea when I first saw it. It looked very interesting and unique. Unfortunately though, I was extremely turned off by the smell and the taste. To me, it smelled and tasted like burnt popcorn. This is not my cup of tea.
